Field Trip

I would love to be that person who buys everything organic. I mean, I couldn't be that person the ONLY eats organic this and that. I can't adhere that closely to anything by means of a diet.

But I get it. I like the idea of organic. I know they aren't known to necessarily contain more nutrients (but recent studies do show organic fruits and vegetables have higher amounts of phytochemicals), but I like that they aren't covered with chemicals.

I also feel that organic meat would be the optimal protein to be eating. It's not rocket science that lots of chemicals are stored in fats. Consuming animals, and their fat, after they've consumed drugs and such is not optimal.

Unfortunately I'm not blessed with an endless pocket of cash to buy all this organic loot. Or rather, it's very unfortunate how expensive it is to not consume chemical laden food.

But I do buy organic when I can. I make room in my very lean budget to get what I can organic.

There's a lot of sites that explain best what is best to buy organic. I know meats with higher fat content are best organic.

That's why I went searching for a local place to purchase meat, and I left my house, got in my car and visited. Yes, I left my house!

The Meat Shop in Phoenix is perfect.

I'm not saying Whole Foods isn't a great and easy meat purveyor, but The Meat Shop sources their meat form local farmers.

The shop is small, and in an unassuming part of Phoenix. Just on the outskirts, half industrial district, half small housing.

The inside is clean, with large cases of fresh cuts of meat all vacuum sealed and ready to take home. I don't have pictures of the inside, because I like to talk to the people in there. They know so much. Then my kids start hanging on the door, trying to eat all their candy and I feel the need to hurry them out.

I've been a couple of times and was so excited to find they have soup bones, marrow bones, PORK BELLY, and rashers. Just a few of the odd cuts that are bit hard to find and oh so delicious.

One time I took my mom who is looking for lean, and clean since her heart is now opened up. They were a wealth of knowledge and said they could custom cut some fat off for her. Funny I was asking for the cut with the largest slab of fat.

The Meat shop carries boxes too. Pork boxes, beef boxes and combo boxes. These are perfect for sharing, and while I haven't really done the math, I think they are a good deal considering the amazing meat that you get.

They also carry the things you may not ever thought of - rabbit, boar, buffalo. Most of that is frozen, but if you have a curious streak it's there for you to try.

If you're local I highly recommend giving them a try. Like their Facebook page and you'll be first to know of their specials for the week.

Their meat is noticeably of a higher quality that what you get at the regular store. It's silky and cooks much faster. If you have any questions at all, the staff will even guide you through it on the phone of the perfect temperature to cook your grass fed tri-tip.

Thank you The Meat Shop! I'm coming for some pork belly next!

Ooh, pork belly. Looking forward to seeing how you cook it!

We have a local meat shop that we got some ribs from recently. The ribs proved to be a good deal and turned out delicious. Their sausage was pretty cheap, too. Your meat shop looks beefier than mine:)
